About Bed Bugs

San Pedro, Belize Bed bugs, bed-bugs, or bedbugs are parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. Cimex lectularius, the common bed bug, is the best known, as it prefers to feed on human blood. Other Cimex species specialize in other animals, e.g., bat bugs, such as Cimex pipistrelli (Europe), Cimex pilosellus (western US), and Cimex adjunctus (entire eastern US).

The name “bed bug” derives from the preferred habitat of Cimex lectularius: warm houses and especially nearby or inside of beds and bedding or other sleep areas. Bed bugs are mainly active at night, but are not exclusively nocturnal. They usually feed on their hosts without being noticed.

A number of adverse health effects may result from bed bug bites, including skin rashes, psychological effects, and allergic symptoms. They are not known to transmit any pathogens as disease vectors. Certain signs and symptoms suggest the presence of bed bugs; finding the insects confirms the diagnosis.

What are the signs and symptoms of a bedbug infestation?

One of the easiest ways to identify a San Pedro Belize bed bug infestation is by the tell-tale bite marks on the face, neck, arms, hands, or any other body parts while sleeping. However, these bite marks may take as long as 14 days to develop in some people so it is important to look for other clues when determining if bed bugs have infested an area:

  • the bed bugs’ exoskeletons after molting

  • bed bugs in the fold of mattresses & sheets

  • rusty–colored blood spots due to their blood-filled fecal material that they excrete on the mattress or furniture

  • a sweet musty odor

TREATMENT COST

  • The first step is an inspection to confirm that bed bugs are present and determine the extent of the problem. Some pest control companies do an on-site visual inspection for free; others charge $50-$200 or more, depending on local rates and the size of the residence. Nature's Own Ext. will do a free visual inspection in most cases.

  • Pest control companies may charge $250-$900 per room treated, with an average of $400-$600, depending on local rates, the level of infestation and the types of treatments used. The homeowner or tenant is usually required to do extensive work (cleaning, vacuuming, washing fabric items, etc.) before and after the treatment. Many infestations need two or three treatments; companies with lower prices may not include these follow-up visits in their quotes. Total costs for getting rid of bed bugs can range from $1,000-$10,000 or more. The New York Times[3] reports that the complete cost for inspections, extermination fees, cleaning and storage for a typical home can easily be $5,000 or more. Nature's Own Ext. will quote a fair and reliable price which is typically lower than these averages.
